About the Exhibition 

1991年，一場名為“非常口”（Exceptional Passage）的中國當代藝術展覽在日本福岡的“博物館城市計劃”中驚艷亮相。展覽由中國獨立策展人費大為策劃，“博物館城市計劃”創始人山野真悟是展覽的制作人。該展覽是中國當代藝術家在國際舞臺上的一次重要亮相，也是中國早期當代藝術在海外非常重要的一個展覽。

In 1991, a Chinese contemporary art exhibition titled Exceptional Passage made a stunning debut as part of the Museum City Project in Fukuoka, Japan. Curated by the independent Chinese curator Fei Dawei, the exhibition was produced by Yamano Shingo, the founder of the Museum City Project. This exhibition marked a significant milestone for contemporary Chinese artists on the global stage, representing one of the earliest and most significant exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art abroad.

Today, the precious archives of this exhibition are being presented at the Quanzhou Maritime Museum and No. 97 West District International Art Community, leading viewers to reflect on the significant historical period.

The Exceptional Passage Documenta will display relevant documents and materials produced during the creative processes of artists including Cai Guoqiang, Huang Yongping, Yang Jiecang, Gu Wenda, and Wang Luyan, representing the Xin Kedu Group. During the preparation of the Documenta, the curator, producer, and artists provided a wealth of content they had never shared before. The collection includes sketches, notes, private correspondence, historical photographs, and documentaries. These documents offer a comprehensive view of the artists' creative processes and highlight significant moments in Sino-Japanese cultural exchange during that period. To protect the originals, the exhibited documents are high-precision scanned replicas, striving to restore the original appearance of the correspondence and records.

A documentary was specially produced for the Documenta, conducting in-depth interviews and filming with the curator, producer, and participating artists. The documentary will present more details behind the archives, enabling viewers to have a more comprehensive understanding of the exhibition’s historical background and the artists' mental journey of creation.

The exhibition is subdivided into two venues, located respectively at the Quanzhou Maritime Museum and the No. 97 West District International Art Community in Fulin Village, Longhu Town, Jinjiang. We hope that through this exhibition, the younger generation will re-examine a pivotal era in Chinese contemporary art from the early days of reform and opening up to the end of the 20th century.
